Legal Migration to Australia

Registration with the Migration Agents Regisration Authority

Australia has a system that requires those who give migration advice in Australia to be registered with the Australian Government. Some migration agents operating outside Australia are also registered although this is not compulsory.

Migration agents operating in Australia are required by law to be registered with the Migration Agents Registration Authority (MARA), an organisation established by the Australian Government to regulate the migration advice industry.

All registered migration agents must:

  • meet qualification requirements for registration, which include a sound knowledge of Australian migration law and procedures (for initial registration) and ongoing professional development activities (for subsequent registration)
  • be of good character

VisAustralia has two registered migration agents. This consists of Lynette Yates, our client manger, and Nicholas Houston. Nicholas has been a registered migration agent since 2004.

Migration Institute of Australia

The Migration Institute of Australia (MIA) is the peak professional body representing the industry concerns of migration agents. The role of the MIA is to support migration agents and lobby the Australian Government in relation to issues affecting the rights and expectations of our clients.

Nicholas Houston has been a member of the Migration Institute of Australia (MIA) since 2004.
