Historic increase to Australia's Skilled Migrant Intake

The Australian Government is looking for qualified people to sustain the rate of economic and population growth and to cover specific demands in the labour market. If you have the talent and work experience that Australia is looking for, the Australian Government will give you and your family permanent residence in Australia.

On 13 May 2008 the Australian Government announced an historic increase to the size of the skilled migration program. The number of skilled migrants invited to move permanently to Australia will increase by 31,000 in 2008-09, representing a 30 per cent increase on 2007-08 levels. This is the biggest increase since the introduction of managed migation in 1947.

This record increase is aimed at easing Australia’s skills shortage. The expansion in skilled visa numbers is designed to meet the needs of Australian companies who cannot find people within Australia to fill available positions.

As permanent residents you obtain similar rights to Australian citizens, including the right to live where you want, to travel between Australia and your country, to work in any occupation or start a business, to buy property, to access the public hospitals, free medical services, and many parts of the social security system, and after 4 years in Australia to apply for Australian citizenship.
